Menudo @ El Zacatecano, Salinas

A few months ago a friend and I dropped in here for dinner. This was our first time, and frankly, chosen because it still had the "open" sign lit after 9pm.

Lucky for us, the cooking turned out to be competent. I particularly liked the table salsa served with our chips. C wanted something mild, ordering camarones ranchero with a fresh tomato sauce sauteed with onions and bell peppers. The shrimp were just on the other side of done though not dried out. Notably, the rice and beans here were excellent. C said that she doesn't even like beans, but she enjoyed these.

I ordered a small menudo, which was more than I could finish. The broth style was lighter in texture, yet still intense in flavor. We both enjoyed the handmade tortillas accompanying the tripe stew. I passed on the leftovers to my brother, the menudo expert, and he liked it enough to ask the source. He also noted the lightness and commented on the high proportion of honeycomb tripe in the mix.

Worth checking out.
