I've been working in Marina del Rey for the past 6 weeks and so far my favorite lunch spot by far is Mendocino Farms. It reminds me a lot of the kinds of places in San Francisco that I miss the most. I've tried a lot of their sandwiches over the past few weeks. Here's a quick recap of what I've thought of them.
Kurobuta Pork Belly Banh Mi - So far this is my favorite sandwich at MF. I've had it the way it's listed on the menu, and last time I asked for them to put it on the Dolce Forno roll which the turkey meatballs comes on. Both are excellent.
Curry Chicken Salad Sandwich - Had this last week when my parents were in town. Loved the curcama hazelnut bread it came on. It sorta reminded me of classic cinnamon raisin bread, but fancier. The lack of mayo was a concern, but the use of yogurt instead actually works quite well.
The Farm Club (Turkey Club) - I liked this, but didn't love it. I wish they used whole slices of bacon instead of pieces. I'm definitely going to try this again, though, because I love clubs, and I have faith the next sandwich artist might do a better job.
A Sandwich Study of Heat (Turkey Avocado) - I liked this more than the club, probably cuz I added bacon to it, and so it was sorta like a turkey club melt.
Spicy Chipotle Turkey Meatballs - I'm not usually the kinda guy that would order turkey meatballs, but I love Italian style meatballs, so I figured I'd give it a try. It's a huge/messy sandwich, and quite delicious with lots of red sauce. My only quibble is that they don't really put very much goat cheese on it. I think I'll ask for another cheese next time, like mozzarella.
The Three Little Piggies Panini - I really wanted to like this more. I mean, how could I not? It has carnitas, bacon and pork belly. It was definitely good, but the one I had was not well balanced. I'll definitely give it another try though...
Cuban Style Grilled Cheese - This was just ok. Compared to some of their better sandwiches, it just seemed to be lacking, plus it was kinda small. I will give it another chance too, though. I want to see if they'll put it on the Dolce Forno roll, which I think would make it more like a real deal cubano...
Speaking of cubanos, I had a pretty solid one a few weeks ago from the Cafe con Leche truck.
Prosciutto & Roasted Chicken - I had this yesterday after reading some favorable reviews. This is my least favorite sandwich I've had there. The prosciutto was weird, and the pesto overpowered everything, and it was too salty (and I like salty food). This is the only sandwich I've had that I wouldn't order again.
Overall, though I love this place. If anyone has any other lunch recommendations in/near Marina del Rey I would love to hear them. Also if anyone knows other places like this around the city that use local/organic ingredients, I'm always looking for places like this to grab a quick dinner on my way home from work.
