This is about the time of year when self-pity sets in: the whole northern hemisphere is reveling in balmy summer fun, and here in San Francisco we're lucky if the temperature reaches 72 and the wind dies down a bit in the mornings.
Anyway, trying to make the best of it, we're having a few people over for beer can chicken Monday night. What would be good complementary side dishes? All I want for dinner these days is soup, so I'm seriously considering some kind of warming yet seasonal soup as a first course--maybe everyone can hold a mug as we huddle around the Weber--and what else? If it were later in the "summer," I'd make some kind of corn pudding/spoon bread thing but it's too early now for corn.
So, I'm interested in seasonal vegetable soup ideas and some kind of creamy, cheesy goodness that will go with the chicken, a salad and a fruit dessert (plum tart maybe).
Thanks for any/all suggestions!
