I was working with a member of Toronto's finest last night and the discussion naturally evolved into food and Smoked Meat.
He told me about Mels on Bloor, just east of Bathurst, and I admit I have never tried them.
He told me that they served Montreal Smoked Meat 24/7 which to me is a treat.
I arived at about 6AM Sunday morning as they were cleaning up the mess from a Saturday night and the place had about 8 people sitting at the tables.
The staff were friendly and it was apparent that they were just winding down from their overnight shift.
I ordered a large Smoked Meat on Rye to go. $7.25
Nothing else. But hey, after working late myself on a Saturday night, what more could I want?
The meat is cut by hand (like it used to be at Reubens on King) and there is varying degress of thckness of meat between the bread.
It was massive and I was anxious to get home and sink my chops into this while the wife and kid were sound asleep upstairs. A treat to myself if you will.
I will say this, the taste of the Meat was good and the amount was great however, when biting into the meat it was obvious that it was undercooked. Not tender enough.
A little bit of a downer really. I WILL give them another shot at a different time so they can redeem themselves. We can always chalk this up to a bad time and day...
