Melbourne restaurant reviews

My idea is to have a list of Melbourne restaurant reviews, which of course are bias, but may be of use for visitors or locals on this board. I welcome any contributions, comments or constructive criticism. :P

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this cosy little restaurant (you sit beside, not opposite your friend/lover/companion). Delicious food, great vibe but you can't book unless its 8-10 people, you get to wait instead! I ended up waiting a total of around 1hr, for a table for two which was actually worth it to be honest, though I was starving by the time we were ready to order. Get in early if you don't want to wait, and for reference I arrived there around 6:50pm. The atmosphere is relaxed, smart and even romantic, with numerous couples and friends catching up. Service was very decent, our waters were kept full and food prompt.

Now onto the important stuff, the grub! (food) We started with an appetizer of sweet corn which pretty much is a must order!!! With a combination of an empty stomach, an intriguing and delightful blend of flavours, it simply hit the spot which was incredibly satisfying. I do recall my friend saying it was the best thing ever.

Between the two of us, we had a total of four tacos and a quesadilla to share, which was surprisingly enough. The lamb quesadilla was alright, I was one less enthused than my companion as she really enjoyed the sauce. Perhaps I was expecting chunks of lamb and had experienced similar dishes before. The herb sauce was tasty and sour though. The fish tacos were recommended to us, by another patron-in-the-queue, so we ordered two, as well as oxtail & pickles and prawn & almond salsa tacos which we split. I enjoyed the fish tacos, though this time my companion wasn't as enthused about them than as I was. I thought the fish was nicely seasoned with spices and cooked well, not too dry or undercooked. The prawn tacos, I would actually say were hearty and had an earthy and crunchy texture. I think it was this reason why my friend didn't think they were that good, as even though she loves prawns and ordered them, wasn't use to a heavier mouthful, and said the flavour of the taco was a bit bland. The oxtail tacos were probably the best out of the tacos! (because I ordered it hehe) the contrast between melt-in-your mouth oxtail portions, the hint of sour and crisp pickles was simply divine which she also agreed upon.

I also had a cocktail, with some liquor (cant remember), watermelon and grapefruit juice, with mint. I didn't finish the drink as it was fairly intense when I wanted something lighter to refresh my palate. That said, I did like the new experience of the tasting, the contrast between the salted rim, sweetness of the watermelon juice and alcoholic content was very interesting and foreign to me.

All in all a wonderful first, in perhaps a nicer Mexican dining experience and ambience, and didn't break the bank coming at a fantastic $25pp excluding my drink. Would definitely go back to try different tacos, and the pork belly which is suppose to be good.
