In January I detoured to Melaka Kitchen in Elk Grove for a quick lunch. Two months old and in soft opening at that point, the roti menu alone made it worth the drive.
The house pulled Roti Prata, $3.75, is beautifully layered with shatteringly delicate crisp spots and other chewier portions. The menu describes it as thinner than roti canai. No kidding, you can see through the croissant-like layers.
The accompanying thin curry sauce for dipping must be homemade as it packs heat and intriguing complexity. Plus it's not too sweet.
From the lunch special menu, Char Kway Teo, $9.99, is fine if heavy on the sticky sweet soy sauce.
Oh, and don’t forget to ask for the fiery Sambal to ramp up the char kway teo. I bet it's housemade too.
