"Mei Wei Cafe" - Hong Kong style cafe with a few surprisingly good, tasty dishes!

Whilst most visitors to the strip plaza - ' Bayview Hill Centre ' at the corner of Spadina Road and 16th Avenue, usually pay focus to the few star tenants like Ming's Fine Chinese Cuisine or Congee Wong. Few will take notice of this relatively new, ' tucked away ' and obscure little humble Hong Kong style Cafe- "Mei Wei"

Too lazy to cook tonight, we all decided to have some simple comfort food and give this neighborhood hole-in-the-wall establishment a try. We ordered a few typical Hong Kong cafe style ' meal in one ' dishes like ' Baked Pork Chop and fried rice casserole with Tomato sauce ', ' Hainanese Chicken Rice ' and ' Rice vermicelli with Squid and Octopus balls in a fish and pork bones broth '.

To our surprise, the food was very delicious and good value for money. The stand out was definitely the milky and dense soup used for the vermicelli. Tasted better than a lot of pork bone soup in Japanese Ramen store! The sweet tasting Octopus and Squid balls were bouncy and chewy with tiny morsels of the cephalopods embedded inside. The nicely sauced, baked Pork Chop Rice is one of the better rendition in this part of town. Though regular chicken instead of the more desirable free-range version was used for the Chicken rice, the end product was more than presentable, especially the nicely seasoned rice component.

With 5 main dishes and complimentary drinks of either Lemon iced tea, coffee or Soya bean milk, total bill came to only $45. Dinner for five?....Not bad at all!

BTW, service was excellent with the sole lady server extremely friendly and courteous. Such a rare sight in a ' cheap eat ', Chinese eatery
