meetinghouse and groups

I made a reservation online for brunch for 10 people at the Meetinghouse. Later, one of the staff called to confirm my reservation. I mentioned that the group may grow to 12 people. The staff said it would be a problem because the restaurant seats only 46 people and that the wait staff are taxed serving larger groups. What's going on here? Are they concerned that larger groups don't turn tables as quickly as smaller groups? I suggested that we could sit at 2 tables. The staff heartily disapproved and said she could not promise that 2 tables would be next to eachother. I asked if we came early, when they open, would it be easier for the restaurant. She responded "no". This is extremely uninviting. Does this situation seem strange to other Chowhounds? Suggestions for other nice places for a group birthday brunch?
