The wife and I just got back from a road trip to North Texas. In Quanah, we found the Medicine Mound Depot. This is a restaurant which sits in a converted train station on the east side of town. We ate there twice.
I had a club sandwich for lunch, which was indeed a club sandwich, loaded with cheese, mayo, tomatoes, bacon and ham. It was great. I spied chocolate pie on the menu. They were out, but the waitress suggested a chocolate mousse pie made by the father of the owner. A good thing; as it was some of the best pie I have ever eaten. Served almost the consistency of ice-cream, with a chocolate mint-graham crust, and chocolate chips on top. Liz had a breaded Chicken Breast dinner; it was served with a load of home-made bread. It foundered her. The meal was so good we came back for supper.
They only serve two types of steaks, so I had a 10-ounce New York Strip cooked medium-rare. The steak was outstanding and so was the baked potato; baked long enough to ensure the skin was hard. I again indulged in a piece of chocolate mousse pie. I got my wife her own piece so she wouldn't nibble on mine.
The restaurant has bowls of peanuts on the tables, you can shell the nuts and throw the shells on the floor.
The owner greeted me at the door at lunch and warned us up front there might be a delay; I was pleased by that. It was worth the wait.
If you are going from D-FW to Amarillo or Denver on US 287, this place is on US 287 on the east side of Quanah. Worth the stop.
