Recent meal at Abacus

crs | Jun 18, 2004 11:23 PM

As a disclaimer, my husband and I truly enjoy Abacus usually. But our most recent meal there was quite a disappointment. I know that Aaron has gone up the Tollway to Jasper's, the second restaurant, but has the menu and the preparation really suffered that much from his departure?

The service was disappointing, certainly not up to the usual standard. The waitress forgot the lobster shooters that we ordered and was extremely slow to take a drink order or the like. I do enjoy leisurely service when I am enjoying the meal and the conversation, but 10 to 15 minutes without someone checking in seems excessive.

We started with the lobster tempura roll and the toro tartare. The toro was great, but the lobster roll had too much rice and tempura combined with negligible amounts of lobster.

We then had the beef and oyster potstickers appetizer. Too salty, too spicy and no oysters that I could discern. Basically it was just a shredded beef dumpling with not much taste.

As entrees, I had the halibut with asparagus and crab in the sauce. He had the duck. My halibut was quite dry and overdone. The duck was good, but nothing to rave about.

We skipped the dessert, because the pastry menu just didn't have anything that exciting on it in my opinion.

Sorry for the rant, I guess I am just wondering if any of you have had similar disappointments or if it was just an off night for the kitchen. Is Rathbun just busy with other things or is there a better explanantion?
