MD Food Center

Is the Maryland Food Center in Jessup open to the public? Is there any reason to try going there for produce or seafood (freshness, price, selection)? Any good (or bad!) experiences?

The seafood is absolutely worth going. Search for posts about Frank's Seafood in Jessup. They're a retail store inside the wholesale fish market. Great fun. Whole fish. Crabs in the summer. Oysters now along with clams, mussels, shrimp, etc. They'll fillet fish for you.

I don't know about the produce. I considered driving in on my last trip to Frank's, but I was busy. Mom's Organic Market is on Rte 175 so I often do a double trip of Frank's for whatever looks great and then whatever produce I need to cook the fish.

    1. Dennis S Can someone please post an address? Thanks in advance.

There's that seafood outlet further East on 175, but I haven't been there yet, either. But wanted to check it out to get some fresh fish.

Dennis - do you mean Franks when you say "seafood outlet"? If you do, I want to warn people that it's not an outlet in the well-known meaning for the term. Prices are not dirt cheap (but they are VERY reasonable), and there are no "seconds" there, seafood is
fresh and properly handled. In addition to what HowChow said above, they also have fish already cleaned if you prefer. Everyone on staff is friendly and helpful. Plenty of recipes on their website and in the store. If you have a long drive home, ask them to put some ice in your bag with your purchase.

            1. Thanks for the great info!

Joel -- Can retail buyers shop in the produce market? I have this idea to get a box or two of tomatoes when they're delicious and actually making tomato sauce this summer.
