Maurya: Nice Indian Dinner on Woodhaven

Chicago Mike | Sep 8, 2004 12:48 AM

We've driven by this attractive storefront several times with intention to someday try it. Tasting notes from a few weeks ago follow:

This was an interesting meal, well prepared, and one that has nice lingering memory, a positive sign.

GF had a Shrimp Tandoori, I ordered the 6-way vegetarian platter.

There was an interesting bread and dip served prior to the food arrival. The Tandoori was just superb. Very large prawn-size shrimp were sizzling on the plates but we found them just cooked perfectly... a nice "grilled" flavor but not rubbery from over-cooking in the least. How you accomplish this with white-hot tandoori on Shrimp ?? answer: very carefully. There were appropriate dips and veggies in accompaniment. Would recommend with reservation that the price from memory seemed just a bit steep (perhaps $17 or so ?).

The veggie platter was very serviceable and authentic... served on traditional metal tray with numerous small metal bowls and a nice indian bread.

Dessert was a nice finish... a fruit ice-cream dish, very nice on the palate.

The setting is on the formal side as alot of special events are held here and very popular with expatriate Indians, price was mid-range and overall fair. Would return without hesitation.
