I just returned from Maui and I am suffering severe depression (luckily the weather is great now where I live).
We did the obligatory lunch at Mama's Fish House right off the plane and it really got us in the mood - as good as I remembered it. Thanks to Tiffany for recommending the coconut-lime cooler delicious!
We had a condo and went to the supermarket in Kihei - not good. The best place to buy groceries was Hawaiian Moons Natural Foods, good produce. We also had plate lunch (for dinner) at Da Kitchen - lots and lots of food, unfortunately there were bugs everywhere which made me lose my appetite. The Shave Ice place in front was great - thanks to L for the recommendation.
Had a pretty decent breakfast at Big Wave Cafe in the Long's shopping center (couldn't get into Stella Blues across the way). Some of the other places - I love Alexander's fish and chips - get the Opakapaka - yum!
We also went to the Pita Paradise in the same shopping center (across from the whale) - really delicious pita sandwiches, not too much atmosphere.
We had breakfast at Charley's in Pa'ia on the way to Hana - pretty good. We also picked up sandwiches from Mambo Cafe based another CH rec (not too good). I had a really hard time finding good sandwiches anywhere in Maui, we ended up at Safeway in Lahaina one day.
I must plug Jawz for fish tacos (the owner has the fish taco truck near Makena) in the Akeza Mauka shopping center (yes, another shopping center). What a great salsa bar they had. Good tacos, though the fish was cut up and grilled. My husband had a pork special that was great.
I did the trip to Sansei in Kapalua and was really glad we did - it was great and we went early and got the discount (people start to line up at 5:00). We had the duck roll, rock shrimp with aioli, miso butterfish (way too rich) steak on udon noodles (great!) and the tempura roll. Good deal.
We were starving one night and at the shopping center in Wailea (yes there are a lot of shopping centers...)we went to Tommy Bahamas restaurant and walked out because we couldn't get anyone to wait on us - we went to Da Kitchen that night instead and saved a bundle.
We tried to go to the Waterfront in Ma'aleea one night without a reservation - big mistake. We went to Buzz's instead and the service was not very good, but the food was okay - had the shrimp cocktail (they brag about their shrimp) and ono in a macadamia crust (every restaurant has that now). Good dessert.
One of my best meals - a big thanks to Torta B.- was at the 5 Palms in the Mana Kai in South Kihei. We requested a sunset view and got the best table in the house - very romantic. In fact the only whales we saw all week were cavorting right in front of us while we sipped our cocktails - try the macadamia chi-chi delicious! I had a trio of fish prepared three different way with three different side dishes! It was mahi with coconut curry sauce and rice, macadamia crusted manchon (sp?) with sweet potatoes and grilled hebei (sp?) with potatoes and lots of fresh vegies. Lots of food (for $40 for an entree there should be...). The best dessert ever - pineapple creme brulee - to die for. Just a nice evening and the service was wonderful - and just 2 minutes from where we were staying at the Maui Kamaole.
