Just returned from 8 glorious days on the island. Few notes from a (budget-minded) food lover.
Costco--amazing, fresh ahi poke (raw tuna w/ maui onions, peppers, salt served over shredded daikon), for grilling picked up fresh ono, ahi and blue mackerel...we went here straight from the plane and loaded up on meats, fish and produce. Ate the ahi poke on Wailea Beach while watching our first sunset of the week. Perfection. Also a terrific place for souvenir buying (Iz CDs run around $10 as opposed to $17 elsewhere, beautiful coffee table books you'll find all over the island for substantially more $, big selection of macadamia nut products, Nicky's 100% Kona coffee for better price than anywhere else)
Grandma's Coffee in Keokea--had breakfast here after watching Haleakala sunrise. Al is a pioneer in Maui coffee growing. Drank my cuppa while sitting next to a Maui coffee tree. Ordered "Bull's Eye"--eggs, spam, sausage, gravy, rice. Got kudos from owner for "going local."
Fairmont resort swim up bar--ordered fruit platter, outstanding and exotic selection, plus you can't beat the atmosphere (nothing like noshin' in a bikini)
Da Kitchen--not gourmet, but definetely local. Plate lunch fare. We like the one in South Kihei just north of Denny's. One plate more than enough for both me and big appetite hubbie.
Simply Sweet's--Hana hwy. in Kahalui (just west of airport exit, near 24 Hour Fitness--ironic). Had searched for Malassalas (Portugese pastry) all week. These guys call theirs "Maui-Salas" Loved the banana cream and passion fruit flavors. Delicious! Home-Maid bakery in Kihei also sells these. Not as big a selection but mine was served hot out of the oven.
Mama's Fish House--Have seen many references to this in threads, but wanted to throw in my two cents worth. Couldn't afford a full meal but thoroughly enjoyed appetizers and iced tea in the lounge. The grounds alone are worth the drive. Awesome crab cakes with caviar. So glad we did this (appetizer, 2 drinks, tip = $30) Next visit I'll sell my first born and have a full meal.
SanSei Sushi--Thur. and Fri. night Karaoke and 1/2 price sushi and appetizers after 10 pm. Imaginative selection, fun atmosphere. So glad we followed up on this chowhound tip.
Saturday morning Flea Market in Kahalui near the post office. Closes around 12 pm. Best fruit and vegetable selection we found. We are now passionate about strawberry-papayas. Ate them every morning with our Kona coffee. Buy plenty. Maui onions, pineapple, grapefruit sized avocados, lychee. Also fun souvenir stuff.
Aloha and Mahalo for reading this sizeable thread.
