Four and a half days...and lots of chow.
Leilani's on the Beach. Yep, you nearly dine on the beach. Beautiful sunset view. Fish and chips OK, really good fries. We split a hula pie---macadamia nut ice cream in a chocolate macadamia shell. Delicious, but we barely finished.
Hula Grill. Practically next door. My bride had a fruit salad, the most exotic on the whole trip...and wonderful---let's hear it for the guava!!! I ordered fish and chips. I think it was mahi mahi (a little sweet) with a red salsa like dipping sauce. Terrific fish, OK fries. Again, you are right on the beach. Both the Hula and Leilani's have upscale menus, but why bother? Everything in Maui is expensive enough (Coke $3.20 for a 2-liter bottle at Safeway!).
BJ's Chicago Pizzeria. I'm not a deep dish expert, but great crust and sauce (we ordered a tomato and cheese). A pleasant surprise!!!
Old Lahania Luau. Yeah, a tourist trap, but they say it's the best of 'em. Mai Tai's very strong (two of 'em got me lost coming back from the bathroom)!!! Food not bad---for a buffet. Delicious pig---though it smelled like vaseline when they took it out of the underground pit!
Sansei Sushi---Very fresh ahi, nice presentation. Excellent rolls! Highly recommended.
Breakfasts were all good, but nothing exceptional...
Kula Lodge---Kula, on the way from Haleakala.
Lahania Coolers---OK pancakes, loved the coconut syrup.
Longhi's (Lahania)---$10 for a skimpy and boring fruit dish?
On the road to Hana:
Moana Grill (Paia)---good pastries and strong coffee.
Pic-nics (Paia)---picnic baskets for the isolated Hana drive. Spinach Nut Burger (veggie) was pretty amazing!
