Matsunoya Sushi Fullerton- review- Attn. Dorothy

I must apologize to you Dorothy. You have recommended this place many times over the last year or two- and I have blown it off. Looking back, I think it was the website I found of theirs (no longer accessible I have found out this morning) that made me think it was a cheesier place than it is. Wow, do I feel stupid. You were right, it is a great neighborhood sushi joint. Walking in on a Wednesday night, we were greeted by a large spacious restaurant with many booths and tables and a very long sushi bar with 3 or 4 sushi chefs behind it- this was just not what I was expecting. There was one other party there (a birthday party actually) and we were seated immediately to begin our long viewing of the menu. I ordered the tempura, salmon, and sashimi combo and a soft shell crab roll and my hubby ordered several rolls and beef teriyaki. The sashimi was very fresh- I was given the normal salmon and tuna with some ono which I'd never had before. Very good. The tempura was good, nothing spectacular. The cooked salmon on the other hand, was just a piece of salmon. No seasonings or sauces, just a piece of cooked salmon. Sort of surprised me. I wish I could remember what it was called on the menu- I was hoping to be able to look it up on the website. The soft shell crab roll was somewhat of a dissapointment as well, however I am not surprised. For some reason all of the soft shell crab rolls I have had in the past 6 months or so were not good. My recent omakase experience at Higo Sushi included. I have had some awesome soft shell crab rolls in the past- becoming my favorite- which is why I order it every time I can. It's getting frustrating when every single one is bad!!!!! They just taste really overfried in yucky oil and chewy- I have had some that weren't like that so I know it's not just the nature of the dish. As we ate, the restaurant filled. Couples, families, businessmen with work in hand looking for a back table. Surprisingly busy for a Wednesday night. We waited for our check, and waited and waited. We asked for our check, and waited and waited. We ended up getting up to wait at the podium because we had literally waited ten or fifteen minutes after asking for the check. I know it was because the place was so busy so i don't hold it against them at all. That's just what happens- there were only two waitresses as it was... we just really wanted to leave! We will be back, it is a good neighborhood sushi joint. I really want to try the specials behind the bar next time. I couldn't see them when we were ordering since I didn't have my glasses on. LOL- had to ask my hubby to read it to me. It's really close to my college so it'll be good for an after school sashimi craving. That fish was really really fresh and tasty. Do you know if they serve omakase? The chefs looked fun... Thanks Dorothy!!!!
