Matsuhisa on La Cienega

On a friend's recommendation, some friends and I decided to dine here. I was forewarned that it was pricey. I've just recently begun eating sushi and learning to appreciate it so I'm not sure what some of the items were. I ordered a side of toro and the Combination Sashimi Dinner which included two appetizers of the day, miso soup, green salad and rice. The sashimi included were four slices of maguro, two slices of hamachi, two slices of salmon and two slices of something else. My boyfriend said that the maguro had a consistency like it had been frozen. Everything else was pretty good.

My boyfriend ordered the $80 Omakase (chef's choice). This was 7 dishes. I don't remember all 7. What I do remember was: lobster ceviche, monk fish with caviar, soft shell crab with sauce, assorted sashimi, clam miso soup and chocolate souffle with vanilla ice cream for dessert. The lobster ceviche was ok, but I don't like lobster ceviche in general. The monk fish with caviar was pretty good, as was the clam miso soup. The soft shell crab was superb. Lightly battered with an excellent sauce. Yum! Also, his sashimi was more fresh than mine! His maguro and hamachi were...there are no words for... The souffle was good, but nothing special.

In conclusion, if you decide to dine here order the Omakase. There are 3 tiers- $80, $100, $120. The sashimi is fresher and you have nice variety of food...at least that was the case for my experience. Oh, and the patio is quieter than sitting inside but there are no celebrities to be seen out there (we made reservations too late to sit inside).
