Went to Matisse on the ocean side of Ocean Avenue in Belmar last night and was really blown away by the quality of the food and the presentation. I started with Vermont goat cheese ravioli that was served over a beet puree that was the earthy essence of beets. My friend had grilled calamari that was mysteriously and marvelously seasoned, really a lot of flavor packed into that starter. We shared our entrees of red snapper with ginger, garlic and cilantro and crispy soft shell crabs with Thai pepper and mint glaze, both came with sticky rice. We couldn't decide which was better, and we were delighted with both.
No liquor license (at least yet) and the sound-level inside can be high, but the service was smooth and pleasant. There is an outside dining area overlooking the beach, and it would be the perfect spot on a beautiful summer evening.
