Mastros Report

Finally made it over to the place. And it does live up to the hype.

Ambience "A" - Classic Steakhouse joint, old people, good bartenders, piano music that wasn't excruciating. Totally felt like a kid being taken out to dinner for like the third time to a nice place.

Service "A" - our group was pretty easy and wrapped up in our own conversations and they did a fine job of keeping the food and drinks flowing without being too obtrusive.

Food "A-" - while the steaks weren't "the best"(i.e. American Wagyu) i have ever had they were a close, close, close second. I had the chef's cut rib eye which almost made me sick trying to finish it - it was that HUGE. Also had a few bites of the bone in filet, and I almost wish I ordered that steak. I am usually apprehensive about filets for being small and bland, but this was not the case. I can only imagine what the NY must be like . . . next time. Between the steaks I have grilled from Harvey Guss and Alexander's Meats, its hard for me to say this but; I couldn't have done a better job than Mastro's did.

We went for old school appetizers; Oysters Rockefeller, Stuffed Mushrooms, and Toasted Raviolis. The T ravs were the weakest out of the set, good but didnt come close to what we get in St. Louis. The Oysters and mushrooms were totally solid.

The reason why I gave the food an "A-" was the sides. After the appetizers, which were more than filling I didnt pay much attention to the ordering of the sides. Spinach led the pack though it was woefully basic. The mashed potatoes were whipped, kinda good but kinda reminded me of cafeteria taters. The Asparagus was tough and stringy - they went almost untouched.

Mastro's is a lot of fun and a lot of meat. We skipped dessert and headed for a Cigar club to try and digest. And actually the tab wasnt that bad. Three apps, six cocktails, one bottle of wine, 4 steaks, and the three sides came to $400. I was expecting a lot worse. While I could get down about the sides they did no disservice to the meat what so ever. I woke up full and I can't wait to go back.
