I am a huge fan of steakhouses and go to to taylors or dan tana's at least once every couple of weeks...I went to mastros when it opened a few years ago and didn't like the experience...i like my steak medium rare and the plate was so hot that it cooked it ot medium in an instant...i also burned myself while cutting the steak because the plate was so hot.
in any case, after reading some recent posts about how you can order the steak on a cold plate I decided to give it another try.
I had a martini ($16) which was excellent. Girlfriend had a nice glass of pinot and we both ordered salads. Her beefsteak tomato and onino was excellent and my caesar was pedestrian. At the table next to us they ordered the seafood tower which had a nice presentation. We were sitting downstairs and the tables are crammed in very close to each other and it is very loud...i couldn't hear my girlfriend half of the time.
steaks came on cold plates for both of us. I got the porterhouse and she got the filet. evidently the kitchen is not used to serving on cold plates. My porterhouse had obviously been sitting for awhile and was lukewarm. cooked right but not at all hot. my girlfriend, who ordered it medium cut into her steak to find it raw/rare. i'm not sure if this is because we didn't get the hot plates but both of our steaks were not right...
they sent her steak back to the kitchen...it came back...still rare/raw in the center...ridiculous...the waiter shined a flashlight on the steak and agreed that it was not done right. also at this point the outside of the steak is black. i said to the waiter that they needed to put a new piece of meat on the grill for her. at this point I am almost done with my steak and she is eating our side dishes.
steak came back a third time...medium rare, lots of blood still; this time it is on a hot plate. outside is totally black...same steak. she cuts open the steak and cooks it to medium on the plate! I taste it but if you don't like black and blue/pittsburgh style it would not have been for you as it was very burnt. by the way my steak was of excellent quality I just wish it had been warmer when it hit my table
The manager comes over to our table and says "I wanted to check on your dinner, I guess there has been some kind of misunderstanding." I replied that there has not been any misunderstanding...we ordered the steak medium and had to send it back twice...the kitchen is having problems. weird choice of words in my opinion as their was no misunderstanding. We ordered it medium. The waiter wholeheartedly agreed that the steak wasn't right.
He said they would not charge me for her steak and would give us a complimentary desert. We didn't stay for desert as we were both annoyed at this point. Dinner with tip was $150 -- 1 martini, 2 glasses of wine, and two sides.
I will not go back to mastros. I don't like the super hot plates and the atmosphere is too loud and crowded considering their prices. Going to Dan Tana's Sunday night to get the bad taste of this experience out of my mouth.
