After our dessert at Hozkhouneh, my brother deadheaded to Rose Market in Mountain View on a mission to buy Persian ice cream. He found Mashti Malones saffron and rosewater ice cream there for $7/quart (also available in larger sizes). This has a more solid texture with less air incorporated and melts more readily than what we had at the restaurant. Also the chunks of frozen cream were of about half the size. The rosewater component is very strong and flowery, and with the saffron is quite addictive if you like perfumey flavors. LA Weeklys review of the sorbet is linked below.
During dinner I had commented that I liked the koubideh at Rose equally well. When I checked the website later, I learned that the restaurant has the same ownership as Roses. In a less expensive setting with equally delicious food, Rose grills koubideh and chicken kebabs in the parking lot and serves them up with flat bread and a bag of fresh herbs. Its been a couple years since Ive had them here but have been told theyre still as reliable. A few umbrella tables and chairs on the sidewalk are available for eating on site.
