Mashi beats Fosselman's, hands down

(FYI - there is a part B at the bottom of this long post requesting other ice cream parlours in LA)

Fellow hounds--

Having experienced the ice cream diversity that is Mashti Malone's and Fosselman's (both within a 24 hour period) I can say confidently that Mashti Malone (La Brea, south of Hollywood) is a richer, creamier, smoother, more flavorful ice cream than the much-beloved Fosselman's (Alhambra), which produces a product which that is not a dense and creamy, and has a great deal more air whipped into it. Mashti's results are sort of like a deep, rich italian gelato. Plus, the owner is a hell of a guy, really nice and soft spoken and really likes to talk with his customers. In fact, on this visit I discovered that he makes a diabetic (no sugar, no fat) saffron ice cream. I tried it-- it's icy and thin on flavor, but not a bad substitute when your blood sugar can't deal with a scoop of the real thing.

Incidentally, parking is the one thing that keeps me away from Mashti, especially if you go on a weekend night when the Lava Lounge next door is active. I mentioned this to the owner, and he sighed and said "I know, I don't want to tow people, but I think I am going to have to start doing that. In the meantime, just park in front of the cars and come inside. They'll just have to wait for you to finish!" (of course I may get a broken window with my falloudeh, but that's another issue entirely)

PART B --

What are the other sublime ice cream shops in LA? I think I remember hearing about a few in the Upland area. Please advise!
