Better than it has a right to be: Masan Asian Grill

i went there today. my wife and i had an appetizer of grilled stuffed grape leaves, and an order of pad thai. both were excellent.

i have never had grape leaves like this, stuffed with ground beef (i don't think there was rice in there). they had a beefy bar-b-cue flavor and a slight vinegar tang, and were a very pleasant surprise.

the pad thai was the best i've had in florida. masan's pad thai was just as it is supposed to be; like they serve at the mandarin oriental in manila (i know that's not thailand but it's some of the best i've had). if you've had good pad thai, i think it's safe to say you'll appreciate the rightness of this one. my wife says it was excellent too, better than the one she had at tatu at the hard rock in hollywood. (personally, i do not think it right to sully massan with comparisons to that place....)

i read that the chef at masan has cooked at some fancy places like the mandarin in miami and some expensive restaurant in the fountainbleu hotel. i don't know much about that, but this place is an absolute find. it is a revelation in what is, in my opinion, the desert of dining that still is weston.

for a frame of reference, i go to hong kong city for chinese food; in miami, i guess i'd go to tropical, but i've not eaten there in a while. my favorite local restaurants are hong kong city, the palm in bay harbor, anthony's runway 84 and ireland's steak house in the hyatt. i have never eaten at olive garden or any sort of place like that, so i don't really know what i might be missing there.... i am also ignorant about food trends and my tastes, i guess, are old fashioned.... i have travelled around and eaten in a lot of places.

finally, the decor looks modern asian i guess, like that of the pei wei asian diner where i poked my head in once -- but did not eat there. the owner at massan was doing the cooking when we were there, and he was very attentive. the place was not crowded. it would be a damn shame if this place fails, and the local junk keeps surviving. people should support this place; there's not much here in weston to brag about. this was a pleasant surprise.
