masa harina in chili

I have a chili recipe that calls for 5 tablespoons of masa harina to help thicken it at the end. I don't have any, but could buy some at the store - it is about 5 bucks for a large bag at whole foods. I probably won't use it again - so that could be a waste. I have cornmeal - can I use that as a substitute? Do most chilis need to be thickened? What else could I use?
