Ma's Islamic Restaurant -- Anaheim

Dorothy | Mar 16, 2006 09:06 AM

Based on a review in OC WEEKLY, a friend and I hied ourselves to Ma's (Chinese) Islamic Restaurant in Anaheim on Monday.

The place has been open for a few months in the site of several failed restaurants. It's large and caters to a largely, well, Islamic clientele; many of the women customers and some of the women staff are veiled.

When I enter a restaurant my sense of smell is always the first sense that engages. Ma's is clean and the smells from the kitchen set your mouth watering.

We ordered two fairly standard dishes -- kung pao chicken and lamb chow mein. Both were prepared skillfully and arrived at the table steaming hot. Both were very tasty. There's no steam-table at Ma's!

The menu includes some more unusual dishes -- like hand-cut noodles and interesting-looking soups. As I walked through the place, every table was laden with delicious-looking dishes and there were many happy-looking family groups.

The only thing I found a bit off-putting is that steamed rice is not included with the dishes (per a note on each page of the menu) and costs extra. Our waiter didn't speak much English, so couldn't answer our questions, but other staff seemed to have more English.

We look forward to future visist to explore the menu in much more depth!

Two dishes plus steamed rice $22 including T&T.
