Mas (Farmhouse) - great

Lau | Apr 7, 200808:13 AM

My gf and I went to Mas (Farmhouse) tonight and I have to say this was one of the better meals I've had in NY in a while. The food is french-american and they really do what I love when it comes to more upscale restaurants: they use great fresh ingredients, keep it reasonably simple and just have excellent execution. The atmosphere is nice, its a small place in the west village (take a look at their website for pics) and the service is nice and pretty systematic. They offered a 4 course pre-fixe dinner for $68 (1 app, 2 half courses and a dessert)

We got the following:
- crab appetizer - gave us a free appetizer, it was crab with a pickled cucumber on top
- creamy chestnut soup: this was similar to a bisque, it was very good, the soup was actually light even though it had creme it in, had a slightly sweet flavor and importantly wasn't over salted (i feel like alot of soups of this nature tend to be oversalted)
- shrimp appetizer - can't remember what this was called, but it was good as well. It was pieces of shrimp that had a thing potato like cake that had been pan seared i believe and then there was a small salad on top of it with a light sort of tangy sauce.
- wild halibut - pan seared with a light cream sauce topped with a compote that had dates and something else which slips my mind served with carrots and potatoes...wish i could describe better, but really excellent
- pan roasted cod in spinach and asparagus sauce - pan seared on a bed of mashed potatoes with a green sauce, this was good although not amazing as i thought it couldve had more flavor
- duck confit - excellent, cooked perfectly, you could really taste the duck...just very well executed
- goat cheese ravioli - pretty good
- chocolate torte - thought it was alright, but not sweet enough, i mean i generally don't like dessert to be too sweet, but this was almost not sweet at all
- butternut squash cake - really really good, it was a small cake with powdered sugar on it served with ice cream (not sure what type of ice cream, but it was only slightly sweet, but went well) and there was a fruit sauce which looked like pomegranates, but they weren't, so im not sure what it was exactly

Overall, really excellent and highly recommend....i attached some pics (#1 - creamy chestnut soup, #2 & 3 - shrimp appetizer, #4 - cod)
