Marshmallows: With or without Egg?

So there's a ton of recipes, and I'm confused between whether to use egg or to not use it?

If I had to think about how they were made before seeing a recipe, I would have assumed they had egg whites. So why don't people use it? Does it affect the shelf life?

Help please.
