A year ago, the popular Marla Baker & Restaurant in San Francisco announced that it would be closing and moving to Santa Rosa. Huh, what, how cool! was my reaction to that news and I've been keeping an eye out for them. The owners settled into Tierra Vegetables commercial kitchen in Windsor for catering gigs and forays to vend at San Francisco's farmers markets. For a brief time this summer, they had a stand at a seasonal Petaluma farmers market.
I finally learned that Marla sells its breads at Tierra Vegetables farmstand in Santa Rosa on Thursdays. Stopping by at 2pm, I lucked out and snagged the last loaf of whole wheat sourdough, $8 (cash only). What a marvelous bread for sandwiches and toast! Thin and crisp crust, not the tooth-cracking dense crustiness, high hydration crumb with a moist spongy texture and delicious nutty notes with a mild tang. This lasted so well, pretty much unchanged after three days on the counter and was reasonably fresh for about eight days, perking up beautifully on toasting.
Last month I swung by the site of its new storefront. Construction was still going on then, but it will be opening in December. Can't wait!
