Mariquita Farm u-pick tomatoes report and upcoming dates

Carb Lover | Aug 31, 2005 05:18 PM

Thanks to rworange's alert, avid home cooking hounds Nathan P. and I visited Mariquita Farm in Hollister for u-pick tomatoes this past Saturday. Some of you know that Mariquita is owned by another hound ("chardgirl" aka Julia) and her husband, Andy. I am friendly w/ chardgirl through CH. For those who missed out, they have just scheduled two more u-pick dates for Thurs. 9/1 and Sat. 9/10. Check here for exact hours and directions:

I'll let the photos below do most of the talking this time, but let me just say that I **highly** recommend going and picking your own tomatoes if you have the time and means. There's nothing like hand-picking your own food right off the vine in a tranquil bucolic setting, and most of the tomatoes are very low and easy for kids to get involved. These are the best fresh tomatoes that I've ever eaten of these varieties (Early Girl; San Marzano; Beefsteak) and at an incredibly low 50 cents per pound, Nathan and I left w/ a station wagon full of 70 lbs. of tomatoes btwn. the two of us! I'm happy to report that I'm not sick of them yet...
