mariposa cafeteria lunches report

felice | Mar 4, 200303:46 PM     7

Since Yimster's original posting, I have eaten at the Mariposa Cafeteria 4 times. I figure it's about time I write about what I've eaten.

First, I should give some advice on how to order. You can order a la carte or get rice plates. A la carte is a better deal. One rice plate can be shared between 2 people that are average eaters. Two a la carte dishes can be shared between 5 people that are average eaters. Also, you have to specify a la carte, or else they give you rice plates by default (after 2 tries, we finally got it right). If you are eating family style, send one person up to the register to order. Otherwise they get confused and they think everyone is ordering. If you order rice separately, get one order per 4 people.

roast pork: tender on the inside, peppery and crispy on the outside. Topped with a brown gravy sauce. Delicious. Served with cabbage.

oxtail stew: also highly recommended. Very soft and lots of glutinous parts. In a light brown gravy sauce.

pork chops: peppery and a hint of curry - good flavor. It was a bit overcooked, but the slices are thin so it doesn't turn out tough. Served with cabbage.

beef with string beans: good. Beef was soft, beans were fresh.

soy sauce chicken: it had been sitting under the heat lamp and was dry. They gave us mostly white meat pieces. I would not order this again.

chow fun: quite standard and a bit greasier than I would like.

singaporean noodles: delicious. Not overpowering with curry. Lots of bbq pork pieces. I would recommend it.

next lunch: pork spare ribs

A note about times to go: They are only open until 2pm, so if you eat a late lunch, they might run out of the good stuff and then you are stuck eating dry soy sauce chicken. Earlier in the week it might not be a problem. If you really care, call first. Better yet, get take out since the atmosphere is not really that great.
