Marigold Menlo Park - closed/changed and small Darbar review

estnet | Mar 28, 2006 02:52 AM

Wanted to go for buffet lunch today. New sign (Hyderabad?) totally different inside (used to be sitdown white tablecloth) now order counter with menu on wall - utilitarian seating totally different feel.

CLOSED on Monday so all this was from outside. They still have the clippings from the reviews of Marigold but have no idea if it is same owner/chef. Does anyone know? They apparently have same phone number and Marigold website is still up with old info (and didn't indicate change of ownership as I had called on Sunday to see if they had buffet and was told a somewhat rude "no" - but no indication of change of ownership during call).

Still craving buffet (take out) - went to Darbar. Hadn't been in a while. Their buffet is changed - more elegant presentation, many fewer choices (eg used to had naan, flat bread- forget the name and pappadum, now just naan. Also used to have soup/southern Indian dishes now seems to be just more traditional northern dishes) Spicing MUCH too subtle (read bland)on all six items I tried (tandoori, 3 meats with gravy, dal and cauliflower) Price was $10 (including tax) - up a few dollars from a few years ago - not a bad value if you have a large appetite, but really WAY too americanized/toned down/poorly spiced (choose one of the above) for my taste.
