Marigold Kitchen and Beau Monde

A Fish Called Wanda | Jan 4, 2005 11:46 AM

I am a Boston hound who just came back from a very delicious trip to Philly. Thank you so much to everyone on this board for recommending Marigold Kitchen. It was a fantastic meal start to finish. Particularly memorable dishes were braised lamb shoulder, black cod with mushrooms, risotto with beets and walnut foam, and all of the desserts. This was a rare occasion when everyone liked everything they ordered even though we had a tough crowd that ranged from chowhounds to unadventurous and picky eaters. The service was outstanding and they handled our party of 9 very competently -- dishes arrived together, our glasses were kept full, and all our questions about the menu were answered. Last time we were in Philly (couple of years ago) we went to Django and really liked it, but Marigold was even better. Don't get me wrong, this was not the best meal I've even had and I didn't have any culinary revelations, but for the price (about $40/person for 3 courses with tax and tip) Marigold is unbeatable. The only places I can think of that can compete in this price range are all outside of US.

We also had a very good lunch at Beau Monde -- a creperie on S. 6th St. Crepes were delicious and authentic. Salmon with leeks and creme fraiche was our favorite savory one and nutella was our favorite sweet one.

Thanks again for all your help.
We can't wait to come back to your fair city.
