Mardi Gras Cajun in Toluca Lake

Finally visited this place the other night after reading a good review on Chowhound a while back. I was totally disappointed. An appetizer of popcorn crawfish, popcorn shrimp, onion rings and okra seemed to be just frozen Sysco-foodservice type stuff. I think it was $12.99 and we ate maybe half of it. My friend tried a cup of the gumbo ($4) and liked it. I got the crab cakes entree ($15) and they were about the worst I've had anywhere. Served with white rice and sauteed veggies, the cakes were smothered in a gumbo sauce and seemed to have NO crab in them whatsoever. I guess I should have sent them back and told the waiter that the cook obviously forgot the crab...but by then the meal was such a bust that I just wanted to leave. Plus, it was my friend's treat so I kind of grinned and carried on. Seriously though, these crab cakes were kinda like patties of stovetop stuffing. This was the worst meal that I can remember having for quite some time, yet this place has been open for 3 years or so, so SOMEBODY must like it. Kinda mind boggling. On the dessert menu, they had one of my all-time faves, banana/vanilla wafer pudding , but I didn't dare. And I didn't want my friend spending any more of her hard-earned money in this joint.
