march madness in las vegas - round 2

kjs | Mar 27, 200702:00 AM

the 2nd week of March MAdness involved a few new restaurants and back to a new favorite. This week had another couple in town to share in some of the festivities.

MY goal was to tour the town trying several hot dog stands and to share my 2 cents - i was hoping my college buddy who was with me the 1st time i tried a slots-o-fun hot dog some 20 years ago, would help me in my quest. Sadly, my "quest" was pre-empted by a greater quest of my friend and his basically follow the "girls next door" gang here in town for hef's 800 year old birthday party......oh well !!

On Friday night ( or was it saturday ? ) we had dinner at STACK in the Mirage ( the sister restaurant to FIX at the Bellagio) ,,,i previously reported on FIX...the restaurants were very, hip, happening...not exactly my scene, but we all enjoyed it. the food fit with the scene - cool and hip...would i call it high-end it was good and it was fun. I ordered the miso black cod wraps, the mini-kobe chili cheese dogs, the kobe burger, tater tots, a special request for shitake mushrooms ( they readily obliged me...this is not a menu item )...and yes...i shared the apps with the group. SO ordered the lamb shank w/ lentils. My friend and his SO shared a salad and the burger - we also had the spinach side and
SO and i finally got the donuts with dipping sauce and we also ordered the mini-cheesecakes with a carmel sauce.
We also shared a bottle of Sauvignon blanc from my fav - marlborough county and true to form, i forgot the name of it...i was pleased with the price for the bottle $ was a great deal ! when the burger came, i also had a glass of pinot noir ( laetitia ...damn is it spelled ...$14/glass ) it was very good.

The highlights - the burger was it worth the $22 charge ( comes with fries which if i had known, i would not have ordered the tater tots )..not really but i asked for medium...and it was medium ! the tots was more like mashed potatoes formed into tots - had a cheese and onion taste to them...they were okay. the shrooms were ok...much better at FIX. the spinach was decent....SO and i were very impressed with the lamb shank...and it was huge !!! The cod tasted great but the pieces in each little mini-lettuce cup were too small !! The chili-dogs weren't bad - but nothing special

the desserts were more on appearance then substance...the mini-cheesecakes got the nod but they subbed a rasberry sauce for the expected caramel sauce.

the service was decent, not great - my friends SO ordered a salad with a side of mashed potatoes ( she never received the mashed taters ) instead they brought her salad twice...they apologized and removed the items from the bill...they gave her a glass of wine for the trouble ! pics....

I made a 2nd visit to Burger bar...this time with successful's a little pricey...but i really like this place - this time SO and friends SO had shakes...they were very good !!!

I again had the angus with blue cheese, carmelized onions and bacon ( this time peppered )...very good ...we had onion rings, sweet potato fries, SO had a salmon and shrimp salad. friend and his SO, shared a burger and the greek salad - they loved everything we ordered....the total bill ( and my friend and i had 2 beers each ) was $108..the pics - it all hit the spot !!

Not sure who will join me in march madness week 3 but i know one thing....good food will be part of the plan !!!
