For what amounts to a small pre-theater menu of soup, salad, chicken and fish, Marcel's delivers the goods.
Went to the Producers last night at the Kennedy Center, so decided we should go to Marcel's for a pre-theater dinner, 3-courses $48 per person including limo ride to and from the Center. Seating is at around 5:30, I think we got there at 5:45. The staff was friendly and efficient, delivering the check after dessert at 6:50 with plenty of time to get to the Center and enjoy a short stroll along the terrace before curtain call.
a small pot of lobster and roast tomato flan, very rich and creamy almost like lobster butter.
First Course choices:
Potato Salad, with mixed greens, vinegrette, slices of cherry tomato. Nothing spectacular but a nice presentation.
Roast tomato soup with Goat Cheese Flan. Soup was served table side with a chunk of goat cheese in the middle of the bowl, the cheese was topped with micro greens and came with two cheese straws. This was a really good dish, the sweetness of the soup went nicely with richness of the goat cheese and a slight bitter earthy flavor from the micro greens
Main Course choices:
Roast chicken with tarragon jus. A chicken breast with what I think was the leg meat deboned, trussed and rolled. Came with a very rich potato puree, slices of summer squash, and a rich buttery tarragon jus. My one complaint was I thought the spices on the chicken skin might have got a little burnt imparting a bit of bitter flavor, but other wise a good dish
Cod with swiss chard and potato puree. A nice size chunk of flakey cod sitting on top of sauteed swiss chard and the same potato puree that came with the chicken. Also had a nice rich buttery sauce.
Vanilla Bean creme brulee. a rich fairly firm creme brulee. Nothing spectacular but tasty
Sponge cake with peach ice cream. The sponge cake was good, but we didn't think the peach ice cream worked very well. Not a very strong peach flavor and not sweet enough.
Petit Fours. three dessert bites. One was pear ginger jelly cube (think fancy Juju Beans), the other was a rum brownie, and the last was a Hershey Kiss sized piece of merrange that was mint flavor (really good).
All in all a very nice meal. The food presentation was execellent, the food was really good except for a few minor hiccups mentioned above. Portion size was a lot bigger then I thought. and you can't beat a limo ride to the Kennedy Center!
If you want to do it up with dinner and a trip to the Kennedy Center (or wish to impress a date), Marcel's is definitely a great way to go.
