Maple Syrup for Brined Turkey

So, for the past 4 years, I have been making Bacon Wrapped Maple Brined Turkey for T Day. Comes out perfect every time.I try to add variety each year by adding different spices, citrus, etc. This year, I sent me eldest son to shop for ingredients. He came back with 100 % maple syrup, grade A dark amber. Never really researching Maple Syrup, I just figured if it's pure it's good. WELL! I opened the bottle to add to my brine and as I was pouring...no smell? I tasted, no maple taste? These were 9.99 12.5oz 3 bottles of sugar!!! No maple Aroma or taste. They were dark, perhaps darker than I usually buy. Too late to take back to store without ruining brining time. I was sooooo disappointed!! Shouldn't it have taste and aroma? Will my bird just taste like sugar bacon? Ugh!# WTH???
