Restaurants & Bars 32

Manhattan at it’s most Chowish

Some shy SF hounds, not me, are visiting Manhattan in May.

They are NOT interested in restaurants in the Daniel, Jo Jo price range (ie, $$$$$). Anything in the range of Babbo to The Sainted Arepa Lady’s price range would be appreciated (that is $$$ to $).

The criteria is deliciousness. And it must be in Manhattan.

I know the Manhattan board gets these request as frequently as the SF board (actually more). So culling the board, the list below seems go get mentioned frequently recently. I threw in links to all of the below and some useful general discussions at the end for other visitors who may search in the future.

One restaurant that I’ve enjoyed, but never gets mentioned on the board is Joe Allen’s. I think the food is very good especially the burgers and it is a fun theatre district restaurant. Any opinions?

Some of the things NYC does well that you can’t get in SF are Jewish Deli, Italian/Pizza, Eastern European bakeries and brunch. New Yorkers put out a nice weekend brunch that has become extinct in SF. SF isn’t exactly the steak capital of the country either. BTW, I qualify Jewish Deli because any starch holding a filling gets called a deli in SF. For example, Mexican deli, Italian deli, etc.

Restaurants I see mentioned over and over on the NY board include;

Aquavit (and a good weekend brunch)
Babbo
Balthazar (snooty, overpriced, but good food and a nice breakfast)
Blue Hill
Blue Ribbon
Gramercy Tavern (never saw a bad post)
Jewel Bakko (never saw a bad post)
Katz’s (frequently recommend yet frequently called touristy)
Lombardi's
Lupa (never saw a bad post)
Peter Lugers (best steak, impossible to get reservations except off hours)
Second Avenue Deli (seems to be the one deli that isn’t marked as touristy)
Soup Kitchen International
The Sainted Arepa Lady's
Turkish Kitchen (never saw a bad post)
Weekend brunch (Five Points, Artisanal, Prune, Waldorf Astoria, Plaza. Norma‘s it seems, is downhill according to a recent post).

So what do you think? Should some of these be eliminated? Anything noteworthy that I missed? In terms of deli, I know it’s an unsolvable dilemma, but 2nd Ave and Katz’s seem to rise to the top.

Here’s the links.

Balthazar is rated as overpriced and snooty, however here’s a post that recommended it for breakfast. I’ve seen a number of posts recommending it for breakfast.

Nice thread on the best in NY.

This tread started by Jim Leff mentions Turkish Kitchen quite a lot. Jeff is pushing The Sainted Arepa Lady.

This tread mentions a Japanese restaurant, Jewel Bakko, that gets mentioned on the board quite a bit. It Also mentions Five Points which seems to get a number of brunch recommendations
