Manhattan/Brooklyn: Late Night Cafe/Dessert/Work-Hangout Spot

psb | Nov 14, 201512:48 AM

Excited to be back in NYC!

I am going to be in Brooklyn for a little over a week and am asking for recommendations for (friendly) places open til at least 10pm ... where I could either loiter and read a book or work on my laptop.

I did some "late night cafe" searches, but the threads looked pretty old and lean.

In the past, I have gone to CAFE OST, TEA LOUNGE and some other places around NYU [dont recall names] ... I just flew in from DC where KRAMERBOOKS on DUPONT CIRCLE is exactly the type of place I'm looking for. CAFE MINERVA here is also on my radar, but I have not been there yet.

My desired zone is say below 23rd in MH or say Williamsburg, or Park Slope or Carroll Gardens [I am currently in WB but may relocate to CG] ... but if there were some great place in Midtown or above, I'd be interested ... again, I've found some places around NYU, but dont know area around say Columbia.

Frankly the priority is a place not hostile to lingering with book/laptop more than the food/coffee ... although i dont really want to sit in a garishly lit all night diner., let alone a pizza shop or a Crif Dog. I suppose some bar/lounges might work on a non-Fri/Sat night? I also have a cell modem so I dont need Free Wifi. So tiny, high turn over place like SPOT DESSERT BAR wouldnt work. Also, this isnt for serious, shut-the-office-door level work ... so some noise, interruptions for conversation, people watching, all of that is fine.

To be honest, I'd be happy for recs for friendly daytime work cafes too ... ideally not place completely filled with dot.com people on laptops [I live more or less in the Mission in San Francisco, so that gets old.]

I really love being in NYC even if part of the trip may be telecommute work days. Looking forward to South BK for Central Asian dining, late night skewer carts on the LES, maybe some Bengali spots, see something at Barbes, return to Flushing Main St for dumplings etc. Havent figured out what "higher aspiration" spots to try on this visit ... I still havent completely recovered from a week in DC eating Mass Produced Hotel Food.

Feedback appreciated.
