Talk about making a good thing even better. I'm a huge fan of the warm and squishy Chinese sponge cakes served at places like Kam Hing (why were they closed today?). So I was really excited to discover the Mango flavored sponge cakes at Dragonland bakery over on baxter st. The mango flavor is very subtle but takes the whole thing over the top to a new level of deliciousness. Or maybe I was just getting bored of the original variety. In either case it's worth checking out.
Also at the bakery for which I can never remember the name on Mott St. just two doors up from Pho Bang at 157 Mott. they have these flat circular powdery cookies that look like they'd be filled with wintermelon but instead they're just light and airy with a certain scone-like quality. It's like a bread and scone hybrid. Very simple and plain yet addictive to me.
