Mango Pickle

Whenever I get mango pickle at an Indian restaurant, they invariably come with a thinly shaved bit of the mango pit attached. This seems to be quasi edible, though I usually discard the offending matter. I was wondering if this is intentional/traditional, or if machines cutting the mangoes for mass produced pickles are to blame? Did the Mughlai also have to endure bits of pit with their pickles?
