mandel bread in NYC

nycsassygal | May 31, 2005 05:51 PM

I'm looking for good mandel bread. I've been recently searching and I've only found mandel that is biscotti like; hard and crunchy and covered in chocolate.
The style I am looking for is softer, has a ribbon of chocolate running through it, has nuts, raisins and cherries.
The only place I've found that has mandel bread of this nature is Michele's Bake Shop in Ft. Lee. Is there anyplace on the island where I can find this elusive culinary treat? Can someone also tell me the origins of this style of mandel bread and why it's so darn difficult to find?!!?

I have been known to make a trip across the bridge for this wonderful sweet, but I'm looking to compare and it seems that nothing compares to the mandel I find at Michele's. Thanks for the help in advance!!!
