Just thought I'd share my nosh-notes from a recent trip to NYC.
Finally checked out the notorious Mama's Food Shop in the East Village. After walking many many blocks from our hotel, we were starved, and Mama fed us well. Huge sides with meat entree for ten bucks, plus delish lemonade and iced tea (fresh brewed) fuelled us up for the walk back. At that price, we were happy to scrape our own plates/clear our own tables, though the on-hand staff seemed more interested in talking real estate than serving customers. Not the end of the world: whose mom was actually June Cleaver anyway?
We also shared a bottle of champagne in the garden of AOC on Bleecker. The food looked and smelled awesome, but we scammed a drinks-only spot by promising to drink lots...We were full from a stop at Artepasta on Greenwich Avenue. HUGE portions and nice prices, plus a decent house Chianti by the glass. The room was better when they dimmed the afterwork lights but in my experience, the service has always been stellar---and being served by handsome hunks never hurts, right?
Try the buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes and roasted onions IMMEDIATELY, chowhounds. Their bread is to die for and this is the best app for the mop-job with same.
We also had a quick pre-flight meal at the Grill at Hotel Metro and while salt was the seeming main ingredient in the mains, they have a lovely, serene room to offer. Good, fresh coffee sent us on our way and you know that counts for a lot when your plane is two hours late.
I love New York. Envy envy envy---the nice kind.
