Mamaleh's: best rugelach since Lederman's (and more)

Blumie | Jul 30, 202003:07 PM     5

Those of us who grew up in the area in the 70s remember how good the rugelach at Lederman's Bakery, in Newton Centre, was. And although many of us discovered Cake Arts, in Sharon, after we lost Lederman's, although good it wasn't really the same. Well I just picked up a bag of mixed raspberry and chocolate rugelach from Mamaleh's, in Kendall Square, and (after eating half the bag in one sitting) am happy to report that this may be the best I've ever had. Certainly the equal of Lederman's. A wonderfully light and crunchy exterior and a chewy and sweet interior. Really, really great.

By the way, I also grabbed a couple of hotdogs from Mamaleh's, and they were fantastic, too. Nothing fancy, but just great ingredients: two top quality hot dogs, griddled and served in grilled (brioche?) buns and topped with sauerkraut and good deli mustard. Short of a classic Chicago dog, which I crave now and again, I can't imagine anything could be done to improve these.

I've been fans of Rachel and Alon since the Rachel's Kitchen days, and anxiously await the reopening of State Park. (I have not yet tried the restaurant that replaced Hungry Mother.) Everything they do is, and has always been, of the highest quality. Those who remember Rachel's Kitchen will remember the care that Rachel and Alon, working in that closet of a space, put into everything they did. Because I live out of town now, this was my first chance to try Mamaleh's. It was great, and I am excited to return tomorrow to try the pastrami reuben. And to pick up another bag (or two) of rugelach.
