Malo mini review - new Mexican in Silver Lake

patty | Oct 9, 2003 02:01 PM

I went to Malo last night for drinks and light late supper with a group of friends. It wasn't too packed with hipsters, as the L.A. Times insinuated yesterday, but I'm sure it's more crowded on weekends. It's owned by Stephen Arroyo of Cobras and Matadors, Hillmont, etc. I think the concept is grandma's Chicano cooking or something like that -- basically I think this translates as reasonably priced food to drink with. The margaritas were good, served on the rocks, $6 each, large selection of tequilas and other drinks. The menu is fairly simple -- old fashioned hard shell tacos, ceviche, enchiladas. One friend had a special of lobster sopes which she said were good, the most expensive dish at $13. Most of the other dishes are a la carte in the $5 to $7 range. The tortilla chips "fried to order" were sizzling hot, greasy and delicious, and come with a choice of three different salsas ($4 a basket). The friend who ordered the enchilada did not look too enthusiastic, but I thought the carne asada soft taco special at three for $5 looked pretty good. I'll definitely be back for those chips -- it's not the place for unique flavors like Loteria, but the atmosphere is fun and the prices are certainly right. There's a patio, a restaurant room and a bar room.
