malagueta..first time

alithang | Mar 13, 200312:46 PM

bday dinner last night, for three, at malagueta. we went fairly early, only 2 others eating..nice room, devoid of much decoration except a large red wall and a painting of a tropacalia woman...took a seat on the avenue at the window, not the most comfy banquette. menu looked simple, not a great amount of dishes, 3 each of chicken, meat and fish, nice apps, a bit sophisticated in a good way. i had a salad amozanas..fresh greens with palmito and tiny grape tomatoes with a raspberry vinagrette which was all very good. sonny boy had fried calamari which was tender, crisp and genorous, and a great tomato dipping of the better calamari i've tasted in a while. bday girl had linguica with a cucumber sauce and yucca frita, totally great dish. the linguicsa was so tasty almost bacon-y, i could eat that forever...nicely grilled and crisp, and the yucca was perfect. the room filled a bit more by the time mains came...chicken breast in a herb sauce for bday girl, with great mashed potato..nice dish done very well but not to exciting, but then it was chicken..sonny had carne giusada, a beef stew which i thought was a bit salty, and i really didn't taste the meats in it so i can't really say how the whole dish was..i had top loin beef, 3 nice slices, about 1/4" thk, with a thin rim of fat..a bit chewy as this cut usually is but cooked well and tasty...rice and red beans accompianied the beef dishes and were exemplary, unfortunately i requested black beans and didn't get time...but the red guys were good, real mellow. had a side of collard greens, garlicky and great, almost crunchy. and the spinach thet came with the chicken was even more garlicky and flavorful. heard some one talking about crispy fried spinach which we will try next time.and the farfofa was definately the best i've ever tasted! but mousse, light creamy, not too sweet..real refreshing..the flan ..oh the ever, dense, silky, sweet just perfection,ya gotta try it. excellent coffe, natch. next time seafood, fried spinach, more yucca frita and flan. yes. a winner. any others menu recs out there? very nice staff (1) and 75 bucks for three, totally satsisfied. we didn't have alcohol...check it out.
