Malagueta, 25-35 36th Avenue (corner of 28th Street), Long Island City, (718) 937-4821, is a great new treat. At Jim Leff's recommendation (and his plea for customers at this Chowhound find) I ate there not once today but twice. At lunch we shared the wonderful fried calamari and then had the "shrimp stew." The shrimp stew was a festival for the eyes and the palate. It was not what one would expect from the description. The description makes it sound heavy, with lots of richness from coconut milk, and liquidy. Instead it contained beautifully grilled shrimp around a bed of rice with a little light elegant sauce.

For dinner, we started out with the highly recommended sausages with fried yucca served with a garlic mayonaise. I then had the fish (pescado). The fish was not as good as my wife's Shrimp Stew. We then shared a wonderful flan with a great cup of coffee.

The room is elegant. The cooking is great. And the price for dinner with tax was $36.00 for two. This place is worth a special trip. It is an "off the beaten track" delight.

While Jim is worried about this place's survival, it was well reviewed two weeks ago in Newday and the owners assured us that The Daily News has come and taken pictures for a review. I for one will make it one of my regular stops with La Flor.
