Malacca, Malaysia - Nyonya options at Donald & Lily

Donald & Lily has moved from their long-time location at Heeren St in Malacca's old quarter to a spartan but very spacious new shophouse location in Kota Laksamana. The newer place is also permanently crowded - local Malaccans out in force for their favourites here: Nyonya laksa - spicy, piquant & addictive and the chendol, one of the best versions here or anywhere in Malaysia - milky-rich with coconut milk, shaved ice blanketing green, squiggly, pandan-scented chendol noodles and red beans, drizzled with thick brown palm sugar ("Gula Melaka").

Other dishes to try are the "Ayam Pongteh" - chicken stew flavoured with fermented beanpaste ("taucheo"); "Mee Siam" - rice vermicelli drenched in a spicy, tamarind-spiked gravy, topped with chopped tofu puffs, shrimps ; "Tauhu goreng" - literally fried tofu, but more akin to Singaporean fruit rojak, with its chopped cucumber, jicama and pineapples, sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds.
