A few weeks ago a friend came in from NY on a saturday at the last min. I didn't have time to make a reservation and figured I'd wing it once I picked him up at the W Hotel. We headed towards Beverly Hills and I figured I go to Spago and beg Laurance or Tracy for the first cancellation's spot. When I stopped at the light at Wilshire and Beverly, I suddenly remembered Mako and made a right. It was 8:30, and I pulled up to the valet and ran in. The host said he could seat me in 30 mins outside ( they have heat lamps and three little tables). We valeted and 15 min later we were seated. I had totally forgotten about this place. I had not been there in over two years, it just slipped my mind. Needless to say, I was so happy that I made that right turn off Wilshire.
I had forgotten how great this food is. Everything we had was perfection. We ordered the chef's tasting menu. We had a fantastic fried oyster. The crab legs were so huge and sweet, that we ordered a second helping of them ala carte. The beef was incredible with 3 types of delicious mushrooms (and I am not a mushroom fan generally), and my favorite course was actually an heirloom tomato and white asparagus salad. We had an excellent Sake that had floral aromas.
The only complaint I may have was that the desserts didn't blow me away. They were not bad by any means, they were just not shockingly delicious, like everything else was. The chocolate lava cake was a little too heavy. But then again, I am never a fan of desserts at any asian restaurant, with maybe the exception of Koi in LA and Vong in NY. The server was an asian woman, I can't remember her name but she was very attentive, sweet, charming and had a great sense of humor and really made it fun for us. I am now going to be a regular here from now on.
