Making Fresh Bread Crumbs Sans "Machine"

Dear Chowdowns:

IS there any way to make bread crumbs out of fresh bread without using a kitchen aid such as a blender or processor? I remember year ago reading about slightly drying out the bread at room temp and then shredding with the tines of a fork, or maybe two forks held crossed in hand? I would like to make crab cakes, the recipes of most require fresh bread crumbs (although some do call for crushed slatines). I would appreciate your suggestions/recommendations for an quick an easy way to prepare the crumbs by hand. Thanks! Doreen
