Making cupcakes with "regular" cake recipes

Do you have any words of wisdom for someone making cupcakes using a regular cake recipe? Aside from adjustments in baking times, are there certain things that I should watch out for? For instance, should I avoid certain types of cakes for making cupcakes? (For example, stay with recipes for light & fluffy cakes as opposed to ones for the denser cakes?)

I'm just fed up with making one, big cake. By the time the middle is done, the outside tends to be dark and dried-out. Also, prepping the cake pan is a nuisance for lazy sods like me. With cupcakes, I just have to dump the batter into cupcake liners in a muffin tin. I never have a problem with the middle/outside uneven baking. I don't have to slice the cake into portions. Cupcakes are retro, fun, and low-maintenance.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks very much.
